About Us
Smith Street institution combining a Japanese grocery with a made-to-order sushi bar — named for hinoki cypress and opened by owner Hayato Takasaka (Broadsheet). The compact shop stocks mirin, dashi, noodles, sake, beer, snacks, ceramics and homewares while chefs behind the rust-orange counter turn out sashimi-grade nigiri, traditional maki, house-innovation nose-maki (topped rolls), chirashi bowls and large sushi–sashimi platters for takeaway; custom platters are available for events. Seating is limited window benches — most guests order in-store or online (Square / me&u). Closed Mondays; Tue–Sat from 10am, Sunday from 11am (May 2026).
